I’m a self-employment and business coach.  This raises three key questions: 1) What is a “coach”?; 2) What qualifies Charlie to be a coach? and 3) What’s in it for me?

1) What is a “coach”?  Everyone knows what an athletic coach does.  He helps the team or the individual athlete perfect their game and achieve the success they desire.  A career and business coach does the same thing.  I help my clients clarify their goals for what they want to achieve in their career or in their business, and then I help them achieve their goals.  I use interviews, assessment tools and world-class resources and regular coaching sessions to educate my clients on their possibilities and then encourage them to pursue them.  Have you ever heard the adage “if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day, but if you teach him to fish, he’ll eat for a lifetime”?  I show my clients where the fish are and then teach them to fish…

2) What qualifies Charlie to be a coach?  I’m on my forth business career now in four different industries.  Can’t hold a job, you say?  No, I’ve loved every career I have had and made three intentional changes.  After receiving my MBA from the University of Virginia, I spent 13 years in my family’s cargo shipping business in Baltimore, in sales, finance, risk management, project management, terminal management and in an executive role handling acquisitions and business start-ups.  I then spent three years as CFO of a helicopter company in Chicago in business development as well as funds and business acquisition.  For the next nine years, I was COO and then President of a Chicago-based cruise line operating world-class expeditions in remote areas such as Antarctica, the Amazon, and high Arctic regions.  During this time, I wore many hats, led a diverse global team and turned the company around for the first time in its 30-year history.  Following 9/11, I pursued a long-nurtured desire to help people one-on-one, and became a franchisee/coach with The Entrepreneur’s Source.  With TES’ extensive training and support, over the past four years I have helped scores of people find successful careers in self-employment.  Building on my extensive business experience, I have taken numerous business coaching courses through TES, including E-Myth’s Embark program.
